College football scores for Oct. 24

UCF had never beaten a top-five team. That changed in Orlando on Saturday, when the Knights outlasted No. 2 BYU 39-31 in two overtimes after a regulation finish full of reviews and penalties. It was the Cougars’ first loss of the season.

The upset set the tone for a rough day at the top of the poll. Seven ranked teams lost, and five of those defeats came against unranked opponents. In the two games between ranked teams, No. 19 Texas survived No. 7 Ole Miss 34-27 and No. 10 Utah came from behind to beat No. 14 Houston 21-13. All 44 FBS games on Saturday’s slate went final, including the late kickoffs in the Mountain time zone.

UCF 39, No. 2 BYU 31 (2OT)

The end of regulation alone took several replays. A sack of UCF’s Keyone Jenkins was first called a fumble and then reversed, a BYU personal foul moved the Knights into range, and their 46-yard try at a winning kick was blocked but recovered by UCF, KSL reported. A 10-second runoff followed, and the game went to overtime.

Bear Bachmeier put BYU ahead first with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Legend Glasker, and Jenkins matched it on the very next snap with a 25-yarder to Josh Derry. In the second extra period, a penalty for running into the kicker wiped out a UCF field goal and gave the Knights a fresh set of downs. Jenkins then found Grayson Brousseau for a 4-yard score and Tyren Hornes for the 2-point try. BYU drove to the UCF 4 before a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the Orlando Sentinel wrote.

Jenkins, making his fifth start in place of injured starter Alonza Burnett III, passed for 293 yards. UCF is 4-3; BYU is 6-1.

No. 19 Texas 34, No. 7 Ole Miss 27

Texas was in control at halftime, up 24-3 after Arch Manning threw for 171 yards and two scores in the first half, according to Yahoo Sports’ live coverage. Ole Miss tied it early in the fourth quarter, helped by two Trinidad Chambliss touchdown passes to Horatio Fields and a fumble recovery in the end zone.

Manning answered with a 1-yard go-ahead run, set up by a 47-yard burst from Raleek Brown, who finished with 157 rushing yards. Ole Miss still got one more chance after recovering an onside kick in the last two minutes, but Jelani McDonald intercepted Chambliss in the end zone on the final play, AP reported. Texas was flagged 14 times for 134 yards. Both teams are 5-2.

No. 10 Utah 21, No. 14 Houston 13

Utah went scoreless in a first half for the first time this season and trailed 10-0 after the break, The Salt Lake Tribune noted. Devon Dampier started the comeback with a 22-yard touchdown run, and Wayshawn Parker’s 5-yard run put the Utes ahead 14-13 with 11:57 to go.

The clinching play came from the defense. Jackson Bennee stripped Houston quarterback Conner Weigman with a little over two minutes left, Jireh Moe recovered at the Houston 9, and Dampier scored on the next snap, ABC4 reported. Dampier ran for a season-high 150 yards. Houston (6-2) reached the Utah 23 on its last drive before four straight incompletions. Utah is 7-0 and has won 13 in a row.

What it means

  • Rough day for the ranked: 19 ranked teams played. In their 15 games against unranked opponents they went 10-5, and the two ranked-vs-ranked games produced two more losers, for seven in all: BYU, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Houston, Iowa and USC.
  • Three unbeatens left in the top 10: Miami, UCLA and Utah are each 7-0. BYU and Texas Tech both entered the week undefeated and left with a loss. Six ranked teams had the week off: No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 5 Georgia, No. 17 Wake Forest, No. 20 Florida and No. 22 Missouri.
  • Tight games everywhere: 22 of the 44 games, exactly half, were decided by eight points or fewer, and seven by three or fewer. Three went to overtime.
  • Points: the 88 teams scored 2,385 points, about 54 per game. The highest-scoring games were Colorado State-San Diego State (105) and FAU-Rice (100).
  • Group of Five leaders: UTSA is 7-1 and 4-0 in the American, and New Mexico is 6-1 and the Mountain West’s only team without a conference loss, according to North Dakota State Athletics.
