Privacy policy
Short version: we don't ask for your name, email or an account to read anything.

What we collect
Uptick has no accounts, comments or sign-up forms, so we don’t collect your name, email address or anything else you’d have to type in. We don’t sell personal information.
Like most websites, our hosting provider and the services we use may automatically log basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you request and the time of the request. We use it to keep the site running and secure.
If you email us, we keep your message and address only as long as needed to reply and to keep a record of corrections and privacy requests.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies and similar technologies are small files or identifiers that sites and services store in your browser. Uptick itself doesn’t set cookies to track you. The analytics and advertising services described below may. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some features of those services may stop working.
Analytics
Uptick may use Google Analytics to understand which explainers are read and how people find them. Google Analytics uses cookies or similar identifiers to collect usage data, such as pages viewed, approximate location and device information. You can opt out with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Live visitor count
Uptick may show how many people visited the site in the past hour. To count visits, each page sends a short request to a small counting service we run on Cloudflare. The service mixes your IP address and browser type with a secret key to make a scrambled code, keeps that code for about an hour so each visitor is counted only once, and then deletes it. It doesn’t store your IP address, set cookies or save anything on your device. Cloudflare handles these requests for us under its privacy policy.
Advertising
Uptick shows ads from TinyAdz, an advertising network. Ads can appear within pages, in a corner of the screen or, occasionally, as a full-screen ad. To choose and measure ads, TinyAdz’s script receives the address of the page you’re reading, the page you came from, your screen size and time zone, and how you use the page, such as scrolling, pointer movement and clicks. It also saves the times ads were shown in your browser’s local storage. TinyAdz handles this information under its own privacy policy, which we don’t control. You can clear this site’s stored data in your browser settings at any time.
Your ad choices
If your device is set to a time zone in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we ask before TinyAdz loads. Until you choose Allow ads, no ads load and TinyAdz receives nothing from your visit. Visitors elsewhere see ads by default and can turn them off the same way.
You can change your choice at any time with the Privacy choices link at the bottom of every page. We save your choice in your browser’s local storage so we don’t ask on every page. Clearing your browser data resets it.
If you’re in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, data protection law gives you extra rights over your personal data, including the right to object to its use for advertising. You can contact us to exercise them.
Fonts
Our pages load typefaces from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google’s servers and Google receives your IP address. Google describes how it handles that data in its privacy policy.
Links to other sites
Our explainers link to the sources they rely on, and we have share buttons for social networks. Those sites have their own privacy policies and practices, which we don’t control.
Children
Uptick is a general-audience news site and isn’t directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to correct or delete it, or to object to how it’s used. Because we don’t collect accounts or sign-up details, we usually hold very little, but you can ask through our contact page. We’ll respond within the time the law requires.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
