About Uptick
Every day, millions of people search for the same stories at the same time. Uptick explains them.
What we do
When something starts trending, whether it’s a court ruling, a ballgame, an earnings report or an outbreak, most people want the same three things: what happened, why everyone’s suddenly talking about it, and what it means for them. Uptick answers those questions in one clear, sourced explainer.
We cover anything the world is paying attention to. That includes world news, U.S. news, business, tech, sports, health, entertainment, science and culture.
How a story gets picked
Several times a day we check what people are searching for and reading, using sources such as Google’s trending searches and the day’s most-read news. We pick the stories with the most interest and the most need for context, and we skip trends that are rumors, gossip about private people, or impossible to verify.
How each explainer is made
- Research. Every explainer draws on at least three independent sources, favoring original reporting, official statements and primary documents.
- Writing. Explainers are written from scratch with AI assistance, in plain language, following our editorial standards.
- Checks. Before publishing, each draft is checked against its sources for accuracy and for copied wording.
- Sources, always. Every explainer lists the sources it relied on, so you can read further and check our work.
- Updates. When a story changes, we update the explainer and its timestamp rather than publishing a duplicate.
Who writes Uptick
Explainers are published under the byline Uptick Desk, which covers our research-and-writing process, including the AI tools we use to draft. We say that openly because you deserve to know how what you’re reading was made.
