TSMC Earnings: Record Q3 Profit Jumps 69% on AI Chip Demand
The world’s largest contract chipmaker posted its sixth straight record quarter and raised its outlook again, with its newest 2-nanometer chips already 8% of sales.

Quick take
- Net income rose 68.7% from a year earlier to NT$763.06 billion, a sixth straight record quarter.
- Revenue grew 50.9% to US$46.72 billion, and high-performance computing, mostly AI and data-center chips, made up 68% of it.
- CEO C.C. Wei said demand still exceeds supply, and TSMC now expects about 44% revenue growth in 2026.
- Fourth-quarter guidance of US$52.3 billion to US$54.3 billion points to another record.
Why it's trending TSMC reported third-quarter results on Oct. 15, and “tsmc stock” climbed Google’s trending searches as investors parsed the numbers.

What’s driving it
- AI, mostly. High-performance computing, the bucket that includes AI accelerators and data-center processors, made up 68% of revenue and grew 22% from the previous quarter, finance chief Wendell Huang said on the earnings call. Smartphones contributed 21%.
- Agents, not just chatbots. CEO C.C. Wei tied the newest wave of orders to AI’s shift from chatbots toward agent-style assistants, which is lifting demand for CPUs and networking chips as well as accelerators. He said demand is still running ahead of what TSMC can supply.
- The leading edge. Chips made on 7-nanometer and more advanced processes accounted for 79% of wafer revenue. The newest 2nm generation, in volume production since late 2025, already contributed 8%, alongside 33% from 3nm and 28% from 5nm.
The margin story
A 51% net margin means TSMC kept more than half of every dollar of revenue as profit, rare territory for a manufacturer that spends tens of billions a year on factories. Gross margin did slip 1.3 points from the prior quarter, which Huang attributed mainly to the cost of ramping up 2nm production.
What’s next
- Fourth quarter: TSMC guided revenue to US$52.3 billion to US$54.3 billion, with a gross margin of 65% to 67% and an operating margin of 56.5% to 58.5%. The midpoint, about $53.3 billion, would be roughly 14% above the third quarter.
- Full year: The company now expects revenue growth of about 44% in U.S. dollar terms for 2026, Quartz reports.
- Spending: Huang kept the 2026 capital spending plan at $60 billion to $64 billion and said investment from 2026 through 2028 should run well above the level of the prior three years.
- New factories: Wei said construction of TSMC’s second Arizona fab is complete, with volume production scheduled for the third quarter of 2027, slightly ahead of plan. A fab in Japan is slated for 3nm production in 2028, and capacity for the 2nm family is expected to more than double next year.
Why it matters even if you don’t own the stock
TSMC builds chips for many of the biggest names in tech, including Apple, Nvidia and AMD. That makes its results one of the clearest real-time readings on how much the world is spending on AI. When the company says orders still outrun its factories and raises its forecast, it signals the buildout of AI data centers is still accelerating.
Quick answers
Why is TSMC stock trending?
TSMC reported record third-quarter results on Oct. 15 and raised its full-year outlook. Investors treat the company as a bellwether for AI spending.
What is TSMC’s guidance for Q4 2026?
Revenue of US$52.3 billion to US$54.3 billion, a gross margin of 65% to 67% and an operating margin of 56.5% to 58.5%.
What does “2-nanometer” mean?
Names like 2nm and 3nm label generations of chipmaking technology rather than an exact physical measurement. Each new generation packs in more transistors and uses less power, which matters for AI chips that run around the clock.
