Musk SpaceX Share Pledge: One Share for Every U.S. Kid in 2027

At Friday’s closing price the promise adds up to roughly $10.5 billion. Musk hasn’t said who qualifies, when the shares arrive or how families would claim them.

Quick take

  • Musk wrote on X on Oct. 19 that next year he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America, calling it the first of many.
  • With about 72 million to 73 million U.S. children and a Friday close of $146.03, the gift is worth roughly $10.5 billion to $10.7 billion.
  • Musk gave no details on eligibility, timing or delivery; Trump Accounts, which can now receive donated stock, are seen as the likeliest route.
  • The pledge came in a reply to Anthropic, which said Oct. 18 it will set aside 5% of its shares for a new public benefit fund.

Why it's trending Musk posted on X on Monday, Oct. 19, that he will give one of his own SpaceX shares to every child in the U.S. next year.

What happened

Elon Musk says he plans to hand a piece of SpaceX to every child in the country. In a post on X on Monday, Oct. 19, he wrote that next year he will give one of his own SpaceX shares to “every kid in America,” and added that it “will be the first of many,” according to Yahoo Finance.

That was the whole announcement. Musk didn’t say which ages count, when the shares would arrive or how a family would receive one, the Associated Press reports. SpaceX had not responded to questions about the plan when Moneywise published its story.

The stock, which trades under the ticker SPCX, ticked up after the post. Yahoo Finance had it near $150 in the first hour of trading Monday.

What the SpaceX share pledge is worth

The math depends on how many children there are and what a share costs on the day it changes hands. Here are the figures outlets used:

Put another way, 72 million shares would be roughly 1.5% of the shares Musk held directly as of August. That’s a large check by any standard, but a small slice of his stake. Bloomberg puts his net worth at about $904 billion, per Moneywise.

For comparison, Musk gave away Tesla stock worth about $5.7 billion in 2021, Quartz notes. This pledge would be nearly twice that.

Keep in mind the price moves. SpaceX went public in June at $135 a share, dipped to about $105 in early August as early investors became free to sell, and traded at $162 in July, according to Quartz and Straight Arrow News. A single share could be worth noticeably more or less by the time any child gets one.

Why Trump Accounts keep coming up

The likeliest delivery route is Trump Accounts, Moneywise reports, and Musk hinted at that in a separate post. A quick primer:

  • What they are: tax-advantaged investment accounts for children under 18, announced in December 2025.
  • The government’s seed money: $1,000 for U.S. citizens born from Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2028, invested in low-cost index funds.
  • The new twist: rules the Treasury Department released in late September let wealthy people and public companies donate stock into the accounts.
  • The catch for families: account holders can’t choose or refuse donated shares and can’t sell them for five years.

Treasury argues that owning a specific company could give kids a stronger sense of ownership than an index fund. Some experts see a downside: millions of young shareholders could make it harder politically to regulate or raise taxes on the companies involved, Moneywise reports.

If Musk does use the accounts, eligibility would matter. The $1,000 seed only covers children born in a four-year window, while his post said “every kid.”

How we got here

Musk isn’t the first to give SpaceX stock to children. In July, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband pledged more than $320 million worth of shares to fund Trump Accounts for over 2 million kids ages 11 to 17 from lower-income households. Dell has pledged $250 for each child 10 and under with an account, a total of $6.25 billion, according to Straight Arrow News.

Monday’s post was a reply to another company. On Sunday, Oct. 18, AI developer Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, pending shareholder approval, Quartz reports. Musk answered that he recommends giving shares “directly to the public” and said that’s what he would do.

The announcement also lands during campaign season. AP notes that Musk is the biggest known donor in this year’s midterms, with over $276 million spent since July backing Republican efforts to keep control of Congress.

What to watch

  • SpaceX earnings on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The company reports quarterly results, per AP, and executives may be asked about the plan.
  • The lockup. Musk’s own shares can’t be sold until June 2027, Quartz reports. He hasn’t said whether the gift waits for that date.
  • The fine print. Look for answers on age limits, whether kids must hold the stock and how parents sign up.

Quick answers
