Patrick Stewart Dies at 86: What Lewy Body Dementia Is

His family named two brain diseases in its announcement. Together they are an example of mixed dementia, a pairing doctors say is often hard to tell apart early on.

Quick take

  • Patrick Stewart died at 86 at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, according to his family’s statement.
  • His family said he had Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, describing his illness as a brief and poignant journey.
  • He first played Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in 1987 and Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men in 2000; he also appears in Avengers: Doomsday, due Dec. 18.
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies causes about 10% of dementia cases, compared with about 60% for Alzheimer’s, according to Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Why it's trending Patrick Stewart’s family announced on Oct. 28, 2026, that the actor had died at 86 at his Los Angeles home, and tributes poured in from co-stars and fans.

What happened

Patrick Stewart, the British stage actor who became a global star as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, has died. He was 86. He died in Los Angeles, at home, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, according to a family statement posted to his social media accounts and reported by Yahoo Entertainment.

The statement said Stewart had Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, and called his illness “a brief and poignant journey.” It said his wife, Sunny Ozell, was caring for him and that family and friends were with him at the end. His longtime spokeswoman, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed the details to Fox News Digital. His representatives asked people who want to honor him to donate to an Alzheimer’s research fund at Johns Hopkins and to caregiver programs run by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Why everyone is talking about it

Few actors were attached to two franchises this large. Stewart’s Star Trek work alone covered more than 35 years, and he was still on screen in 2026. Co-stars responded within hours. Jonathan Frakes, who played Will Riker, shared the family’s notice, TVLine reports. William Shatner, the original Enterprise captain, called him “a magnificent actor.” Hugh Jackman, his X-Men partner as Wolverine, said he would miss him “all of my days.” Ian McKellen, a friend since their Royal Shakespeare Company years who officiated Stewart’s wedding, also paid tribute. By Oct. 30, fans had left flowers at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Euronews reported.

A career in five dates

Year Milestone
1966 Joins the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he stays 16 years
1987 First episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation as Picard
2000 First X-Men film as Professor X
2010 Knighted for services to drama
2020 Returns as Picard in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Stewart grew up in Mirfield, Yorkshire, and left school at 15. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before the RSC years. A Next Generation producer cast him after seeing him read Shakespeare at a lecture at UCLA, Fox News reports. That show ran seven seasons and led to four films. He also made comedy part of his range, from Robin Hood: Men in Tights to Extras and the voice of Avery Bullock on American Dad! He published a memoir, Making It So, in 2023, and he served as chancellor of the University of Huddersfield near his hometown.

He has one more major release ahead. He reprises Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens Dec. 18, according to Yahoo Entertainment. He is survived by his wife and his two children, Daniel and Sophia.

What Lewy body dementia is

“Dementia” isn’t a single disease. It’s a name for a group of symptoms, such as memory loss, confusion and changes in mood, that several brain diseases can cause, Alzheimer’s Research UK explains. When someone has more than one of those diseases at once, as Stewart’s family described, doctors call it mixed dementia.

The two diseases work in different ways:

Alzheimer’s disease Dementia with Lewy bodies
Share of dementia cases About 60% About 10%
Protein involved Amyloid and tau Alpha-synuclein
Typical early signs Memory and planning problems Swings in alertness, visual hallucinations, movement trouble

The Lewy-body figure means roughly 1 in 10 people with dementia has that form, about 100,000 people in the U.K., the charity estimates. In Lewy body disease, a protein called alpha-synuclein builds up in clumps inside nerve cells. Those clumps are the “Lewy bodies” in the name. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke lists acting out dreams during sleep, stiffness, tremor and falls among other signs, and notes that memory loss tends to come later than in Alzheimer’s.

That overlap makes diagnosis hard. NINDS says early symptoms are often mistaken for Alzheimer’s, no single test confirms the disease, and certainty only comes from examining the brain after death. There is no cure; treatment targets the symptoms. From diagnosis, people live an average of five to seven years, with a range of two to 20, the agency says. It usually starts at 50 or older and affects slightly more men than women. Public awareness grew after Robin Williams, who was found after his death in 2014 to have had the disease. His daughter, Zelda Williams, was among those paying tribute to Stewart this week.

What happens next

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on Dec. 18 with Stewart in the cast. Expect more tributes from the theater world as well; the RSC called him one of the finest Shakespearean actors of his generation.
